Business Startup & e-Learning Platform – App & Website UX Design
The problem
The lack of accessible and user-friendly resources for individuals with limited knowledge of entrepreneurship can prevent them from pursuing their passion and starting their own successful business.
The goal
To create an easy-to-use mobile app that provides comprehensive e-learning resources, including market research, business planning, and mentorship, for individuals with limited knowledge of entrepreneurship, to empower them to turn their ideas into successful businesses.
User research
Our user research revealed that individuals with limited knowledge of entrepreneurship often feel overwhelmed by the complexities of starting a business and lack the confidence and resources to pursue their passion. They expressed a need for accessible and user-friendly resources, such as e-learning tools, mentorship, and networking opportunities, to help them navigate the legal and financial aspects of entrepreneurship and turn their ideas into successful ventures.
Persona 1: Sarah – App
Problem statement: Sarah is an individual with limited knowledge of entrepreneurship who needs an easy-to-use app with features for idea generation, market research, business planning, and mentorship because they lack confidence in their ability to start their own company and need guidance and support to turn their passion into a successful business.
Persona 2: Alex – Website
Problem statement: Alex is an individual with a strong background in finance who needs a comprehensive website with a resource library, blog, online courses, and community forum because they lack knowledge of the legal and financial considerations involved in starting a business and need reliable resources and support to start their own company.
Ideation
I did a quick ideation exercise to produce ideas for how to address gaps identified in the competitive audit. My focus was specifically on Business Idea generation and Business Startup guide (E-learning).
After ideating and drafting some paper wireframes, I created the initial designs for the LankaFilings App, ‘These designs focused on delivering personalized guidance to users to help start their own business
Low-fidelity prototype
To prepare for usability testing, I created a low-fidelity prototype that connected the user flow of generating business idea and start business startup
Usability study: findings
01
Skill option : People need to start business with their existing skills and abilities
02
Course continuation : People need to start learning where they left easily
03
Forum anonymously : People need to ask question anonymously on the forum

Refining the design
Based on the insights from the usability studies, I applied design changes like providing a expanded skill option to section from the home screen to generate business from their existing both skill and education
Based on the insights from the usability studies, I applied design changes like providing a option to read related article from the blog in the current eLearning course
Accessibility considerations
01
Clear labels for interactive elements that can be read by screen readers.
02
Initial focus of the home screen on personalized recommendations help define the primary task or action for the user.
03
Additionally, the app’s font size and spacing has been optimized for readability, and clear labels have been used to aid users with cognitive or language barriers.
Responsive Website Design (with mobile 1st approach)
sitemap: With the app designs completed, I started work on designing the responsive website. I used the App sitemap (Mobile first approach) to guide the user flow of each screen’s design to ensure a cohesive and consistent experience across devices.
The designs for screen size variation included mobile and desktop. I optimized the designs to fit specific user needs of each device and screen size.
Takeaways
Impact
The impact of our UX designs for lankafilings business learning app has been positive, with users reporting an improved experience in business startup. One study participant remarked, “I found the app much helpful to start a business and it saved me a lot of time” Our goal is to continue to iterate and improve the app’s usability for all users.
What I learned
Through the lankafilings business learning app project, I have learned the importance of conducting extensive research to understand the needs and behaviors of diverse user groups. I have also gained valuable insights into the design process, including the importance of accessibility considerations and the iterative nature of design.
Next steps
01
I would also conduct further user research to understand the needs and pain points of the target audience, and incorporate their feedback into the design process to create a product that meets their needs and expectations.
02
Conduct research on how successful the app is in reaching the goal to reduce food waste.
03
In addition, I would work on developing a style guide and design system for the app to maintain consistency and ensure a cohesive user interface across all features and functions of the app.
